Adaptec RAID 3805 8-port SATA and SAS Controller Review

  by Nathan Kirsch (legitreviews.com) - May, 2007

legitreviews.com

The Adaptec RAID 3805 is an 8-port controller that supports SATA and SAS drives and next-generation PCIe connectivity. It features Adaptec RAID Code (ARC) with RAID levels 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50, 60, JBOD and more! Read on to see how this MD2...

If you are serious about both data integrity and brute speed, get a hardware sata controller. This particular line of cards from adaptec is an excellent choice in terms of performance and price. The card is compact, very usable and comes with a great...

Excellent RAID Solution

  by Rusty (newegg.com) - Jan, 2010

Many people are writing about the false positives that they are experiencing with this card, but if you use proper drives in RAID, you will have no issues.

This card has been great, I have had no serious issues with it. I have this installed on my Linux NAS, and it is incredibly easy to maintain and configure the RAID

The only problem I had was when I put a green drive into the RAID, and then had it drop out of RAID. This was totally my fault for putting a desktop green drive into a RAID array

False Positive Issue

  by gENUINE gENIUS (newegg.com) - Dec, 2009

Adaptec support is awesome, and they will let you know the same thing about TLER. They just won't tell you, you can still use desktop drives, but need to use the utility to fix the issue.

The issues with False Positives, is what is called TLER, or Time Limited Error Recovery. If you have one of these RAID cards, and use desktop grade drives, then TLER is the issue not the card. On an Enterprise level drive, TLER is set to 7-15 seconds....

People being ignorant to the fact of why the card doesn't work. We live in a society where people want to blame someone or something even if they don't have the facts ; Please realize that you need to figure out what the issue is and realize that if...

Had to special order cable for my specific backplane Supermicro M28E2. You should check which cable you need before you plan to use it. They have many different cables for different applications i found out.

Very Fast ; 500 megabytes per second linear write at peak ; 350MB/sec average random read write ; Five Velociraptor 300GB 10K RPM drives ; Came with two calbes for back plane hookeup ; vi_io_guide.pdf ; Verified Compatible with : ESX 3.5 U3*3 , ESX 3.5...

Great Card So Far

  by N/A (newegg.com) - Sep, 2008

Solid Raid Card. Built with 8 Segate 7200.11 1tb drives into a raid 60 array. Took about 10 hours to build. Drivers picked up by default in Win2008 Server x64 though you should install the Adaptec specific drivers to get the storage manager to work...

Instructions are par however the tool set for configuring and managing the controller feels a little out-dated. Could take some lessons from ASUS on doing tasks such as flashing Firmware and dedicated setup GUIs. Once you get past that, however it is a...

Awesome

Takes a while to boot the firmware. Once booted this is a very easy to configure, as well as flexible RAID controller. Onboard XOR calculations, low CPU overhead

Expensive, but you get what you pay for

Good stuff

My previous review was supposed to be posted under the 3405* The cons I posted are not too negative as I can work around all of them. So the 5 rating is justified with the quality I get from Adaptec. Windows 2008 Server, E6420, 4GB DDR2, Adaptec 3805...

I love Adaptec. Works along side an Adaptec 1430SA [as I expected], but not my onboard RAID controller for a Tyan S5197 (ICH7R) [as I expected]. It's too bad because that Intel RAID performs very well

I had 4 x 500GB Seagate ST3500630AS in RAID5 with the onboard ICH7R RAID. HDTune reported 223MB max read with an average of 175MB read. I recreated the RAID array on the 3805 - with a 128KB stripe (same as with onboard) I was getting a max of 190MB...

Excellence to be expected

  by Adam (newegg.com) - Jul, 2008

Running in an Asus Striker II Extreme stuffed in with 2 x GX2s and a Sound Blaster Fatality. If I didn't have excellent cooling, my workstation would be on fire with this setup. I plan on getting the 3805 for one of my servers soon.

I love Adaptec. Very fast. Only sustains about 225MB/sec with 2 x 15k Fujistu 37GB HDs, it might have something to do with the 256KB stripe I setup. Goes up to 1024KB if I recall. Aggregate LED output

Very hot. Touch for more than 1.5 seconds and you'll pull away quick

Great Card!

Great card for SerialATA II and SAS RAID setup. Very fast! and all drive are how swappable. I like the hot swappable feature.

Adaptec Storage Management software is annoying sometimes. In order to use this software in full control you need to setup your logon account with password.

Good card

  by Luke (newegg.com) - Feb, 2008

A lot of motherboards are picky with 3rd party RAID controllers. The Asus M2N32-SLI Premium Vista Ed (AM2) refused to recognize the card as a bootable device. Other boards that it worked for me (using Win Srv 2003) are the GIGABYTE GA-MA69GM-S2H (AM2)...

Solid RAID-5 performance. Compatible with VMWare ESX Server 3.0.2 and 3.5 straight out of the box, no hassles. I got it working in an Asus A8N SLI Premium (939), and Asus P5E (775). It's in the P5E right now

Relatively slow card bios initialization times (some 30-40 seconds), but considering it's in a box that's up 24/7, it's not a big enough issue to subtract a point
